Can't open the flash light to change the batteries? Does the bottom open up? Do the batteries get replaced from the top by removing the bulb first?

The back, tail cap, should be unscrewed from the maglite to replace the batteries. It can be pretty hard to open as they are generally not opened very often and there's a rubber seal to keep it water-proof. You could try using a pliers or vice but be careful not to squeeze it out of shape. There's also a possibility that if the batteries are in it a long time that they have leaked and the leaked chemicals have sealed it. If this is the case you may be able to get the maglite replaced depending on what brand of batteries were in it. Maglite have an agreement with the makers of Duracell, Ever-Ready and Ray-O-Vac to replace the Maglite if one of their batteries leak in it.Details are on the bottom of page at

Here is the problem - the D size batteries must have been left in the Maglite too long and corroded a bit so I can't get them out. Can you remove the bulb housing from the flashlight. There is a blue ring that is around the base of the black bulb housing for most of the way. Does that come off? I hope to be able to push the batteries out from the top. Thanks for any help.

The last time I looked you could not really do that, I had the same problem. I got a small piece of music wire (like a coat hanger but made out of harder metal and a bit thinner) and put a small bend in the end and used this to hook the batteries. I would stick it in then twist it so the small "hook" would be over the top of the battery, then pulled it out. Also some battery companys say they will replace any device damaged by their leaking batteries. if you can tell what brand they are you could find out. Also if these are rechargeable Ni-Cd batteries the crud from the inside is toxic, so I would not mess with it

I bought it from my neighbors and it is a 2 d cell flashlight not rechargeable and i scratched it up after putting a cheap black spray paint on it i was wondering how i should get it back to its original shiny black self? or which paints to use and should i take the bottom layer off or what because there is a bunch of little marks from other pint layers coming off

It would be quite an undertaking to just to restore a flashlight... but you will want to use a green scotch bright scrubber and scrub the entire light then apply a "self etching primer" then use a flat black pain and then use a high gloss clear coat... after the paint drys for a few days you can use some polish or turtle wax to get it nice and shinny. it will never be factory because they use there own method and most likely proprietary paints.

I need the small tool to be able to get into the outer cover( the black button )to be able to change the bulb. where I can replace the bulb.

I believe you have to take the rubber cover over the button off, then push on the edges of the button, it's attached to the light assembly so you can pull it out, call Maglite tech, they'll help. Good luck.

I have a 3AA LED mini maglite with stuck batteries. The best I can tell they have not leaked. I tried freezing the unit as well as heating the barrel to no avail. Is there a way of removing the bulb assembly out the top so I can use a dow to tap the batteries out? If not, how can I get them out? Thanks for any help you can give.

Well, I have a 3 cell mini maglite AA with a corroded battery stuck up next to the LED. I have searched but not found a way to remove the LED to push out the battery with a dowel. The best solution I read about was to drill a hole in the battery and insert a large screw and pull it all out. (My Maglite is from 2009 or 2010, but I think they made this model in 2011, 2012 and 2013- this is for SEO!)
