How do I remove the battery?

This is not intended to be a user replaceable battery, although I have found a replacement battery that means that SOME people have replaced them. the cost is $9 +s&h. I don't think most camping outfitters would be able to help you with it, But it would be worth a try. My suggestion would be (if you have one in your area) take it to a Batteries Plus store. They are quite good at replacing batteries that are NOT meant for user replacement. Best of luck to you.

Pull on the back piece where the strap attaches. Straight out. It appears! Do the opposite to get it back on. Make sure it's on securely or the batteries will shift out of position and you will be left in the dark.

In the Coleman 5312 Retro Series Lamp is it supposed to work off the mains charger even if the battery will not charge. Battery is confirmed dead but lamp will not work on mains nor on 12v car lead. Don't want to buy new battery if the lamp unit iteself is faulty.

Brentonb, In the event that you don't get a direct answer (which is likely, since this is a pretty obscure question) I suggest you troubleshoot it this way. Remove the bad battery. Use the charging device that came with the lantern and wire it temporarily to the device in place of the battery. This will supply the correct voltage, but takes the possibly shorted battery out of the circuit. If you are certain you have the polarity correct and you know that the charger works, then you have your answer. good luck.
