If the batteries leaked, it likely sealed itself shut. You'll need a pair of channel locks...I soaked mine in olive oil to eat some of the rust and popped the end cap off with channel locks. I'm working on clearing the battery at the end of the light's soaking in vinegar. (lucked out, only the battery near the cap froze in) Should be out by morning.

Flashlight only works when end cap is partially on. Will not work when cap is fully screwed in. New batteries installed.

I've never hear of this being a 'feature.' Consider searching for a replacement tailcap, for the contact it makes with the batteries may be faulty. You can also contact Maglite and ask them to honor the warranty.

I need the small tool to be able to get into the outer cover( the black button )to be able to change the bulb. where I can replace the bulb.

I believe you have to take the rubber cover over the button off, then push on the edges of the button, it's attached to the light assembly so you can pull it out, call Maglite tech, they'll help. Good luck.

My TUF4D1 flashlight does not have a twistoff cap opposiite the light. Unless I have to take out screws?? I still can not find out how to get into the battery compartment of this flashlight?? any body have an answer?

I've owned this flashlight for years. In the comments above, ignore the instruction to remove the rubber casing around the lamp area. Simply grasp the whole front of the lamp piece (including the rubber cover), and twist in a counter-clockwise direction to remove. Then squeeze together the two black tabs and pull the battery compartment out to replace the batteries.

Here is the problem - the D size batteries must have been left in the Maglite too long and corroded a bit so I can't get them out. Can you remove the bulb housing from the flashlight. There is a blue ring that is around the base of the black bulb housing for most of the way. Does that come off? I hope to be able to push the batteries out from the top. Thanks for any help.

The last time I looked you could not really do that, I had the same problem. I got a small piece of music wire (like a coat hanger but made out of harder metal and a bit thinner) and put a small bend in the end and used this to hook the batteries. I would stick it in then twist it so the small "hook" would be over the top of the battery, then pulled it out. Also some battery companys say they will replace any device damaged by their leaking batteries. if you can tell what brand they are you could find out. Also if these are rechargeable Ni-Cd batteries the crud from the inside is toxic, so I would not mess with it
