Here is the problem - the D size batteries must have been left in the Maglite too long and corroded a bit so I can't get them out. Can you remove the bulb housing from the flashlight. There is a blue ring that is around the base of the black bulb housing for most of the way. Does that come off? I hope to be able to push the batteries out from the top. Thanks for any help.

The last time I looked you could not really do that, I had the same problem. I got a small piece of music wire (like a coat hanger but made out of harder metal and a bit thinner) and put a small bend in the end and used this to hook the batteries. I would stick it in then twist it so the small "hook" would be over the top of the battery, then pulled it out. Also some battery companys say they will replace any device damaged by their leaking batteries. if you can tell what brand they are you could find out. Also if these are rechargeable Ni-Cd batteries the crud from the inside is toxic, so I would not mess with it

Won't light with new batteries and bulb - MagLite Mag Lite® 2x 'd' Battery Flashlight In Display Box Black Case

Look where the batteries go and make sure there is no crud or corrosion in the housing or on the spring in the end cap .if you remove the bulb and check the voltage using a multimeter ,if its under 3 volts you have a bad connection somewhere in the housing.

I have a Garrity Industries #06443....AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT.....I cannot figure out how to open the case to change the batteries. I can unscrew the top of the unit to access the bulb. And, I assume that the small, notched end of the unit unscrews to access the batteries. I just cannot open...even with channel locks. So, I want to be sure that is the correct way to access the batteries before i really crnak on it....Thanks for your help. Bill

The notched end of the unit is the lid of the battery cover. It might be cross-threaded. Immerse that end in hot water and then twist holding with a dry towel. Hopefully that should open it.

I have a GE battery powered (4 D cells) camping lantern. It will not turn on. The batteries are new and have been tested. Is there a way to remove the fluorescent and check?

Fluorescent lamps need a high voltage in order to ionise the gas inside and make them light up..Torch batteries will not produce enough voltage alone so the battery voltage is boosted by an inverter that is incorporated into the torch or lamp body. It is unfortunate but the majority of such lamp inverters use the cheapest, nastiest, flimsiest circuitry it is possible to use in such things and having taken a few lamps and torches (of respectable brands) apart and seen such things I find it easy to imagine they were thrown together in a far eastern handbag factory when there was a world slump in handbag sales. When working correctly the inverter produces a voltage high enough to really surprise anyone touching the wrong parts but they do tend to be unreliable due to the usually low quality. A handy person could conceivably persuade such a lantern to dismantle and check the switch and wiring and ensure the battery voltage is reaching the inverter but it would need electronic experiece to venture further into the reasons why it stopped working. A replacement tube could be tried but they fail rarely and rarely do they operate long enough to actually wear out so buying a new tube is likely to be wasted money.
