Should I use an electrical or propane lantern for camping?

The answer depends on how much and what type of camping you will be doing. If you will be just spending the night and moving on the next day, rechargable electric lighting may be your best answer, especially if you want to use the light inside a tent or you are going to let small kids use the light. However, they require some year-round maintenance, as the batteries need to be topped up every 1-3 months to get maximum life, and even then you'll probably get a maximum life of aboiut 3 years. Propane lanterns will probably give you a lot more light, and you'll be able to carry spare propane bottles so you'll never have to worry about running out of fuel. However, they do produce flame, so using them in an enclosed area can be dangerous due to CO, and they must be kept away from flammable objects. Additionally, the glass globe and fragile mantles are subject to breakage. Perhaps the best solution would be to use electric lighting and have a small propane lantern as backup.
