What is the difference between a stuff sack and a compression sack?


Your sleeping bag is usually sold with a stuff sack, which just refers to the (usually nylon) bag that the sleeping bag comes in. If space in your backpack is not an issue, than the provided stuff sack will be fine for you, but keep in mind that it is not totally waterproof because water can enter in through the opening at the top. A compression sack is a separate sack that you can buy if you want to pack your sleeping bag into a smaller size. The compression sack shrinks the size by allowing you to use straps to squeeze any excess air out of the sleeping bag. The straps are connected to a piece of fabric that can cover the opening of the sack and make it completely water-proof.

What is the proper way to stuff a sleeping bag into a compression sack?


The bag needs to be compressed as tightly as possible by folding it lencthwise, then rolling it tightly on the floor using your hands and knees to keep it tight. If there are straps then tie them tightly around the roll. It should slip easily into the sack if you set the dimensions of the fold correctly...
